Brazil is popular for the Christ Redeemer, the statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro which is 38 meters tall and weighs 700 tons. It is located at the highest point of Corcovado mountain that is 700 m high and is situated in the Tijuca Forest National Park.
The creation of this wonderful religious symbol was originally the idea of Pedro Maria Boss, a Catholic priest. In the mid 1850’s, he wanted to have something to signify Christianity in the country. However, the proposal was disregarded after Brazil became a republic in 1889. Then in 1921, the Catholic Circle of Rio proposed to create a landmark on the mountain of Corcovado. After signatures and donations were collected, the Statue of the Christ finally stood at the peak of the mountains and attracted a lot of tourists all over the world to visit Brazil.
The Christ Redeemer is the tallest statue of Jesus Christ and is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone. It took five long years before this statue was constructed and was finally inaugurated in 1931.
